Top 3 Tips to find a great read at Salvos Stores

Are you a bookworm? Or maybe, you’re thinking of getting Dad a book for this Fathers Day?

If the answer is yes to either of these questions, you’re in luck. We have spoken to Bree @borrowed.books, an avid reader and Salvos Stores shopper to give us her tips to finding a great read at Salvos Stores!

But, before Bree gives us her tips, we wanted to find a little more out about her!

1. What is reading to you?

Reading to me is that I can be taken to another place or another life and all I have to do is pick up a book. As Stephen King says

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

2. Best Salvos stores book haul?

I have bought some great books from Salvos Stores, among my favourites are many Stephen King novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Messenger by Markus Zusak.

But of all my finds, my best was The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffeneger. I saw it while browsing and I decided to buy it. I’d heard of the movie but had never read it. It’s turned out to be one of my favourite books.

3. All time favourite book?

This is the hardest question because it’s almost impossible to pick just one with so many great books and book series out there. But I will. It’s Harry Potter, no surprise really, they’re books I could read over and over again and still enjoy. Reading it is like going home, it’s a story that will stay with me and so many others “..until the very end.”

4. Your Top 3 tips for finding great books at Salvos Stores!

  1. Go Regularly! I usually only go a couple times per month depending on how busy I am. But if you can go more often or to different stores, do it! As my dad says “cast your net wide”!
  2. Double check the shelves! Seriously, look carefully. I scan each shelf and then do it again because often I’ll find some gems I missed the first time around. Then triple check, just in case!
  3. Hidden Shelves! In my local Salvos, there’s a little shelf called ‘Staff Picks’. It’s often missed because it’s hidden around the corner of the other shelves. But that’s where the good stuff is, so always check your local for those hidden shelves!

Bellerive Salvos Stores welcomes you to our wonderful store

Everyday I drive to work feeling excited about what the day will have in store for myself and my  wonderful staff. It’s a pleasure, not a chore to actually leave my home and go to work. Every day I get to meet  lovely people and learn more about the suburb I work in and the people who live there and surrounding suburbs.

Bellerive  store is situated in Percy Street Bellerive. It’s a blissfully serene  little area, close to the water and the yacht club with lots of little restaurants here and there and an abundance of local businesses.

Our favorite place to eat is the bakery on the corner, which we visit quite regularly. They have the most delicious cakes, which could be the reason we have all put on a few kilos or it simply could be we are a content and happy bunch 🙂

Bellerive isn’t just visited by locals, a lot of our customers also travel from northern, western and southern suburbs over the Tasman Bridge just to visit us.While we treasure our existing clientele, we love to welcome new people in our store and quite often other managers will refer them onto us from their stores. Amazingly all too often we hear “what a gorgeous little shop, I didn’t know you were here, but I’m so glad i found you” and our reply is always the same “we are so happy you came to visit us!”

We strongly believe in making our customers feel welcome and we want them to experience the warm and friendly atmosphere we have. Alot of our customers just come in for a chat or to tell us something important that happened in their life,  and of course to find that little treasure or article of clothing .

We try hard to cater for everybody’s needs with our stock. We have that lit bit of vintage, lovely fitted suit for work, or that dress to die for. We can accessorize your outfits or dress you up for an up coming party, there’s truly something for everyone.

Our men’s wear is fantastic and we get a lot of male customers, we aren’t just dominated by the female gender. Its great to see even kids and students coming into to find a bargain.

I especially love school holidays when you see the mums and dads or grand parents bringing the children in with their loose change and teaching the children to be thrifty. It gives me enormous satisfaction because we all want our kids to learn how to spend wisely whilst still obtaining good quality items

So please come and visit myself (Tess) and my very friendly crew (Karen, Sonya, Jan, Gina, John, Gaye, Ian and Robyn) in the Bellerive store. Let us know if its your first visit, come in and experience our exceptional customer service and become a part of the Bellerive family.

Thanks for reading a little about our store and stay tuned there’s so much more to come from Bellerive Salvos Stores.

Behind the scenes at Abbotsford TVC shoot

Entering the Abbotsford Salvos Stores at 8.00am, adrenalin pumping and excited for the days ahead, I was immediately blown away by the transformation the store had undertaken. This was no longer a Salvos Store… it was a set… and by the sheer size of the lighting rigs and camera equipment, it could have been a movie set!

It was evidently clear the crew had already been working busily away to get everything set up and ready to go. Once the actors started arriving, had their hair and makeup done, were styled by the fabulous Claire, we were ready to get down to business.

But something I learned quickly, it’s not all as simple as that…

Each shot has to go through a tedious set up process. First the camera men and Director discuss the scene and set up the camera in the best possible angle. Then the lighting guy goes to work. Our lighting guy, Pete, was quite the lighting mastermind! He made a clever little rig he set up out of materials lying around to make one scene look like the morning sun was coming through venetian blinds. Genius!

Then comes the set dressing process. It was all hands on deck to set dress each scene. No detail is over looked in set dressing. Everything in view if the camera needs to be considered, every article of clothing, every vase, every cushion… everything!

Then there is the colour blocking. Looking on the test screen you might realise you need something red on the right side of the screen or something green on the bottom left side, but the beauty of a set in Salvos Stores, it’s like shooting in a prop shop! We had everything we needed at our fingertips. We had a great time looking through some of the incredible donations and giving them new life in the eyes of the camera.

Once all this is done its go time! That’s when it’s time for the actors and the director to work their magic, bringing the script to life. Then of course the process starts all again for the next scene.

Myself and some of the crew actually got to make a bit of an appearance in the Donate TVC, granted we are blurry because it’s a time lapse scene, but there you have it, my 15 (micro) seconds of fame!

Thanks to the Director, Producer, Actors, Cameramen, Grip, Stylist, Stage Hands, Assistants and everyone else who helped out, we wrapped up two very successful days.

So even though I have just pulled back the curtain and revealed the magic of oz, I hope you’ll enjoy the final products…

About Salvos Stores

Salvos Stores is the retail arm of The Salvation Army Australia Southern Territory and operates over 200 retail stores in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Salvos Stores operates as a fully functioning retail business, recycling pre-loved goods and relying heavily on the generosity of the public.

Salvos Stores maintains a professional retail network and dedicated store staff, professional Support Office and a great team of retail managers.

All profit from the sale of goods at Salvos Stores contributes to invaluable community programs operated by The Salvation Army.

History of Salvos Stores

Salvos Stores has been in existence in various forms since the 1880’s. The Salvation Army Prison Gate Brigade initiated a salvage works program which acted as work therapy for those coming out of prison. The profits from sales funded the program.

Thrift shops opened throughout the Territory and each state had a central collection and distribution centre. This work became known as The Red Shield Industries and provided work therapy for people in the homelessness and rehabilitation programs. This financed The Salvation Army’s social programs.

In the early 1990’s there was a structural change and The Red Shield Industries was re-named The Salvation Army Family Stores. The Salvation Army rehabilitation programs and the retail arm were now separate entities.

In 2006 the name was changed to Salvos Stores.
