Top 3 Tips to find a great read at Salvos Stores

Are you a bookworm? Or maybe, you’re thinking of getting Dad a book for this Fathers Day?

If the answer is yes to either of these questions, you’re in luck. We have spoken to Bree @borrowed.books, an avid reader and Salvos Stores shopper to give us her tips to finding a great read at Salvos Stores!

But, before Bree gives us her tips, we wanted to find a little more out about her!

1. What is reading to you?

Reading to me is that I can be taken to another place or another life and all I have to do is pick up a book. As Stephen King says

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

2. Best Salvos stores book haul?

I have bought some great books from Salvos Stores, among my favourites are many Stephen King novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Messenger by Markus Zusak.

But of all my finds, my best was The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffeneger. I saw it while browsing and I decided to buy it. I’d heard of the movie but had never read it. It’s turned out to be one of my favourite books.

3. All time favourite book?

This is the hardest question because it’s almost impossible to pick just one with so many great books and book series out there. But I will. It’s Harry Potter, no surprise really, they’re books I could read over and over again and still enjoy. Reading it is like going home, it’s a story that will stay with me and so many others “..until the very end.”

4. Your Top 3 tips for finding great books at Salvos Stores!

  1. Go Regularly! I usually only go a couple times per month depending on how busy I am. But if you can go more often or to different stores, do it! As my dad says “cast your net wide”!
  2. Double check the shelves! Seriously, look carefully. I scan each shelf and then do it again because often I’ll find some gems I missed the first time around. Then triple check, just in case!
  3. Hidden Shelves! In my local Salvos, there’s a little shelf called ‘Staff Picks’. It’s often missed because it’s hidden around the corner of the other shelves. But that’s where the good stuff is, so always check your local for those hidden shelves!

How to: Emily’s tips on matching old & new!

Wondering how to layer that op shop skirt with the rest of your wardrobe? Emily Billing, local blogger at blueumbrellalane.com shows us how to mix old and new in style!

The trick in winter is layers. I’m a Melbourne girl. And in Melbourne, layering is super important – unless you want to get caught out in the biting wind! I used to just suck it up and not bother but in recent years, I’ve joined the layering bandwagon. Who knew you could be so warm!

My feature piece in this outfit is this fur vest I picked up at the Phillip Island Salvos over the summer for $10. The vest is actually 2 sizes larger than my regular size, so all I can say is don’t be a size snob.

Sometimes oversized pieces are actually perfect!

Next, I chose my base piece. Layering allows you to wear clothing from all seasons hence, the summer playsuit I matched with it. I bought this playsuit new from Zara when I was living in Seattle and I’ve worn it over 30 times! I just adore the fit, style, and pattern.

Once I combined these two pieces I was just waiting for the cold weather to appear. When I received my friend’s Birthday party invite a couple of weekends ago this outfit finally had its debut. With the addition of cream leather gloves, my vest got to show off its true 60’s glamour.

In winter, keeping your feet warm is also very important. So I matched my outfit with my Urban Sole Boots – one of my favourite brands. You can usually buy these at Myer but I scored them from Salvos Stores on Chapel Street for only $15! Barely worn leather boots – win! Lastly, for final touches, I added my white Witchery clutch which I also thrifted for $5. This adds a great pop of lightness to the outfit!

The way you can mix new and preloved gives you an opportunity to use your entire wardrobe. You can choose summer or winter clothing and rock out with a super fun outfit! Just check out the flared sleeves, so good! To change it for a more daytime look try with knee-high flat boots or regular flat shoes and a heavier daytime bag.

I encourage you to try mixing your summer and winter clothes and discover new outfits just as I did! It’s a great way to extend the life of some of your favourite pieces. And who knows, maybe, just maybe you’ll discover your perfect winter outfit!

Happy wintering and layering 🙂
Em xx

What you will need to start your layering:

  1. Pre-loved winter jacket
  2. Skirt/dress/jumpsuit for base
  3. Stockings
  4. Cute boots

Perth’s 5 Best Op Shops

Attention Op Shoppers of WA  – want to know Perth’s best op shops? Hannah (In the Dress Up Box) gives us a rundown of her favourites as well as what goodies you are likely to find in each!

Hey there, I’m Hannah from In The Dress Up Box!
I’m an op-shopping nut who loves rifling through racks at my favourite second-hand stores. Whether you want to put together a fabulous wardrobe or style up your home, op shops are the way. Don’t believe me? Just take a look into a few of these stores and see what you find!

To get you started, today I’m sharing my top five favourite Perth op shops.  And of course, my favourite Perth Salvos Stores.

  1. Salvos O’Connor

A perennial favourite of mine. If you are new to op-shopping then this is a great place to start! It’s big but not overwhelming. O’Connor Salvos is super organised. Vintage, brand new and designer clothing are separated making it easy to find a fab item! This great floral dress is just one of the myriad of things I’ve found there over the years.

Good for:
Accessories
Dresses
Shoes

Find Me: 354A South Street, O’Connor

  1. RSPCA Palmyra

This op shop is the closest one to my home so I find myself popping in weekly. It’s recent revamp means it now stocks a fantastic range of vintage clothing. My most exciting score from this store is my wedding dress! I tried on this beautiful 1950’s wedding gown on a whim a few days after getting engaged. I fell in love. It was a total fluke and exactly what I love about op shops, you just never know what you’ll find! While the dress set me back $50 it goes down in history as my favourite op shop purchase ever. As I haven’t got married yet there is no photo but here’s another gem I found there…

RSPCA

Good for:
Vintage
Jewellery Accessories

Find me: 59 Carrington Street, Palmyra

  1. Salvos Bibra Lake

This Salvos is MASSIVE. I love it. It has a huge selection of clothing and accessories, as well as furniture and house hold items. Late last year when I moved into my new home, I managed to furnish and style the whole place almost only from op shops. And Salvos, Bibra Lake was a gold mine! My favourite find was my gorgeous solid Jarrah coffee table. In perfect condition for just $20!

Salvos Birba Lake

Good for:

Homewares
Art
Furniture
Linen / fabric

Find Me: 28B Port Kembla Drive, Bibra Lake

  1. St Luke’s Op Shop

One of Perth’s best kept op shop secrets. It is tucked away in the basement of St Luke’s Church in Mosman Park. I’ve found SO many amazing things there over the years, most recently a Fendi cross body bag for $10! The store is small and only open 3 days a week (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) but it well worth a trip! After you’ve had a rummage you can stay for a cup of tea and slice of cake with the lovely volunteers that run the store. Op shopping AND cake?! Doesn’t get much better than that!
St Lukes

Good for:

Designer gear
High end high street labels

Find Me: 20 Monument Street, Mosman Park

  1. Good Sammie’s Fremantle

I love this store for two reasons; it’s open on Sundays and it’s CHEAP! They have crazy sales and you can find some incredible things. I got this awesome rainbow dress for $1 in one of their sales! It’s one of the few Perth op shops that open on a Sunday, so it’s perfect for an afternoon shopping date. But beware, it isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s chock-a-block, disorganized and full of bargains. Before you dive into the madness, make sure you are mentally prepared.

Good Sammies

Home wares
Cheap clothing

Find Me: 181 High Street, Fremantle

So that’s it for me, hope this comes in handy for those is WA or anyone passing by Perth! Happy op shopping!!

What’s your Salvos Stores technique?

There’s no doubt that shopping at Salvos Stores is different to shopping at a major commercial retailer. A good kind of different.

There is a talent to Salvos Stores shopping. A little creativity is required. Every item you touch at Salvos Stores is essentially on the ‘buy now or regret it later’ rack. Every dress, hat or book is the last one in stock. Yes, it’s a little daunting, but there is a little thrill in knowing that it’s special and a little exclusive.

What’s the trick to successful second-hand shopping? We asked our most seasoned Salvos Stores customers to share their techniques . . .

“I’m very methodical; I shop aisle by aisle.”

~

“When browsing art I always try to imagine the piece with and without the frame. Sometimes the frame might not be for you but the print or original painting/drawing is perfect. In that case you can spend a bit of cash to get it re-framed and donate the old frame!”

~

“Shop frequently. I visit two to three times a week. My local Salvos Store constantly turns over their stock so there are always goodies to be had!”

~

“Be open-minded. Don’t expect to get something specific but go in with a general list of items. Nearly everything I wear is ‘op-shop couture’!”

~

“I give the store a quick once-over. Then I go around again and take my time.”

~

“Have a look at the Music section. I have found some fantastic recycled music at Salvos Stores and the prices allow you to take a punt on something you don’t know but looks interesting! It’s an excellent way to diversify your taste in music.”

What’s your trick to shopping at Salvos Stores? Maybe you don’t think there is one! As always we love to hear about your Salvos Stores adventures and treasures.
