Top 3 Tips to find a great read at Salvos Stores

Are you a bookworm? Or maybe, you’re thinking of getting Dad a book for this Fathers Day?

If the answer is yes to either of these questions, you’re in luck. We have spoken to Bree @borrowed.books, an avid reader and Salvos Stores shopper to give us her tips to finding a great read at Salvos Stores!

But, before Bree gives us her tips, we wanted to find a little more out about her!

1. What is reading to you?

Reading to me is that I can be taken to another place or another life and all I have to do is pick up a book. As Stephen King says

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

2. Best Salvos stores book haul?

I have bought some great books from Salvos Stores, among my favourites are many Stephen King novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Messenger by Markus Zusak.

But of all my finds, my best was The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffeneger. I saw it while browsing and I decided to buy it. I’d heard of the movie but had never read it. It’s turned out to be one of my favourite books.

3. All time favourite book?

This is the hardest question because it’s almost impossible to pick just one with so many great books and book series out there. But I will. It’s Harry Potter, no surprise really, they’re books I could read over and over again and still enjoy. Reading it is like going home, it’s a story that will stay with me and so many others “..until the very end.”

4. Your Top 3 tips for finding great books at Salvos Stores!

  1. Go Regularly! I usually only go a couple times per month depending on how busy I am. But if you can go more often or to different stores, do it! As my dad says “cast your net wide”!
  2. Double check the shelves! Seriously, look carefully. I scan each shelf and then do it again because often I’ll find some gems I missed the first time around. Then triple check, just in case!
  3. Hidden Shelves! In my local Salvos, there’s a little shelf called ‘Staff Picks’. It’s often missed because it’s hidden around the corner of the other shelves. But that’s where the good stuff is, so always check your local for those hidden shelves!

Responsible Donating: Top Tips!

WE NEED YOU! (. . . and your donations)

People love to donate their old clothes and furniture. It’s quite magical to think that the coffee table you’ve shared many a cuppa on, could go to a new home for a whole new life. Sustainably, it’s magical too. Instead of going straight into the landfill, it can be reused and saved! Untitled design (1)

We rely on good quality donations from the public in order to fully function and to provide substantial funding to The Salvation Army Welfare Programs. So if you have a pair of boots collecting dust in the back of your wardrobe or any other goods that you think someone else could love, donate them to Salvos Stores.

Each year Salvos Stores spends in excess of $6M disposing of unsaleable items and rubbish that are left at our stores. This is a considerable amount which could be used to further assist those at need in our communities.

So check out our Salvos Stores Top Tips to Donate Responsibly!

1. Ask yourself if you would buy the item or if you would be comfortable giving it to a friend

If not, it’s probably not an item we would be able to sell. Make sure the items are clean, in good condition and if they are clothes, reasonably wrinkle free.

2. Check it’s not on our unsaleable list

Due to health and safety reasons we are unable to sell some items and some require appropriate health and safety regulations certified on them. Check if any of your donations are on this list before booking or going in-store.

3. Plan ahead

Plan when and where you are going to donate your goods. Find your Trucks5nearest store and opening hours here. Note: all Salvos Stores are closed on Sundays, but some remain open for donations only. Find a Sunday donation centre. Please don’t leave donations at stores outside of opening hours. Alternatively you can also book a home collection online.

4. Donate and feel amazing!

After donating, feel proud that you have saved items from going to landfill AND know that the sale of your item will contribute to the funding of The Salvation Army’s Programs.

Late last week, we had a very special delivery to six Salvos Stores across Victoria….some beautiful vintage and retro fashions. These wonderfully unique items will be a welcome addition to your wardrobe, turning your simple black skirt into an outfit to make all your friends jealous!

These items are even more special as they go through a very unique process before hitting our shelves. They are provided to Marriott, a company who employs people with disability of varying degrees and provides them an opportunity for work that would not have been available to them otherwise. These wonderful employees steam the clothes and fix the buttons before sending them back to Salvos Stores.
